Contract Keys
Contracts are a part of adult life, and the digital age has made them even more common than ever before. We have become so comfortable signing contracts that half of the time we do not even take the time to read them. Think I'm crazy? Just think back to your last iOS update. Or the last song you purchased on iTunes. Contracts are literally everywhere!
Just because contracts are a part of everyday life does not mean you should treat them casually. Here are some keys to protecting yourself as you navigate this life of constant contracts:
1.) Read Before Signing: This may seem obvious, but it's the easiest way to avoid frustration or dispute. You would never buy a house without reading the purchase agreement, so don't "sign in" to an app for your child and unknowingly grant them unlimited Candy Crush purchasing power attached to your Visa card because you didn't read what you were agreeing to. Many contracts we encounter more than once, so it's not too difficult to dedicate the time to read them the first time and be certain of their scope.
2.) Use a Filing System: Be organized! Many contracts we utilize commonly are in effect for extended time periods, and these should be filled for future reference. You benefit from having a system in place to easily access your cell phone contract, lease agreement, etc...in order to verify both parties obligations for the term. You can't remember everything, so have a place where you can find your agreements.
3.) Be Certain and Specific: Whether you are drafting a contract or signing a contract, do not finalize any agreement until you understand exactly what you are committing to. Pay attention to the details, and do not leave anything open to assumption or interpretation. If you are unsure of anything, consult an attorney and ask them to review the terms with you.
